Black Friday sees record $7.4B in online sales, $2.9B spent using smartphones

Following swiftly on the heels of a Thanksgiving that broke records with $4.2 billion in online sales, Black Friday also hit a new high, although it just fell short of predictions. According to analytics from Adobe, consumers spent $7.4 billion online yesterday buying goods online via computers, tablets and smartphones. The figures were up by $1.2 billion on Black Friday 2018, but they actually fell short of Adobe’s prediction for the day, which was $7.5 billion.

Salesforce, meanwhile, said that its checks revealed $7.2 billion in sales (even further off the forecast).

Popular products included toys on the themes of Frozen 2, L.O.L Surprise, and Paw Patrol. Best selling video games included FIFA 20, Madden 20, and Nintendo Switch. And top electronics, meanwhile, included Apple Laptops, Airpods, and Samsung TVs.

A full $2.9 billion of Black Friday sales happened on smartphones. These conversions are growing faster than online shopping overall, so we are now approaching a tipping point where soon smartphones might outweigh web-based purchases through computers.

“With Christmas now rapidly approaching, consumers increasingly jumped on their phones rather than standing in line,” said Taylor Schreiner, Principal Analyst & Head of Adobe Digital Insights, in a statement. “Even when shoppers went to stores, they were now buying nearly 41% more online before going to the store to pick up. As such, mobile represents a growing opportunity for smaller businesses to extend the support they see from consumers buying locally in-store on Small Business Saturday to the rest of the holiday season. Small Business Saturday will accelerate sales for those retailers who can offer unique products or services that the retail giants can’t provide.”

Adobe Analytics tracks sales in real-time for 80 of the top 100 US retailers, covering 55 million SKUs and some 1 trillion transactions during the holiday sales period. Salesforce uses Commerce Cloud data and insights covering more than half a billion global shoppers across more than 30 countries.

One of the reasons we may be seeing slightly less fervent sales than the analysts had predicted is because the holiday sales season is starting earlier and earlier. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when many people have days off, has for a long time been seen by retailers as the start of holiday shopping season. That has changed as retailers hope to catch more sales over a longer period of time.

As more people shop, they are also shopping for more expensive items. Adobe noted that Average Order Value was $168, a new record level yesterday for Black Friday, up 5.9% on a year ago.

Smartphone sales were up 21% over last year and those who were not buying were, as a start, browsing, with whopping 61% of all online traffic to retailers coming from smartphones, up 15.8% since last year.

As with yesterday, e-commerce “giants” with over $1 billion in sales annually were doing better than smaller sites: they had more smartphone sales, and 66% conversions on browsers on smartphones, Adobe said. They have overall also seen a 62% boost in sales this season, versus 27% for smaller retailers.

As with the Thanksgiving sales patterns — when bigger retailers also appeared to do better than their smaller counterparts — there are a couple of reasons for this. One is that the bigger sites have a wider selection of goods and can afford to take hits with deep discounts on some items, in order to lure users in to add other items to their shopping cars that are not as deeply discounted. Or, bigger online retailers can simply afford to give bigger markdowns.

The other is that the bigger stores often have more flexible delivery options. Adobe noted that those using click-and-collect orders, or buy online, pick up in store / curbside grew by 43 percent.

The story is not all rosy for big retailers, however. Edison Trends notes that some big platforms are actually seeing very mixed results this time around.

It will be interesting to see how and if patterns change for smaller retailers on Sunday, which is being dubbed “small business Sunday” to focus on buying from smaller and independent shops. Shoppers have already spent $470 million, and Adobe believes it will pass the $3 billion mark. Cyber Monday, the biggest of them all, is expected to make $9.4 billion in sales.

HyperX Cloud Flight gaming headset is its best ever price in this Black Friday deal

Black Friday is a great time to pick up accessories for your PC. Keyboards, mice and controllers often take a nice price cut, meaning you can replace some of the older items you've been holding onto for a little too long.

Now, one of Black Friday's best gaming headset deals has arrived: the HyperX Cloud Flight wireless headset, reduced to its lowest ever price of $79.99 as part of Amazon's Lightning Deals. That means you only have so long to get it: before the deal expires, or before the headset sells out, the latter of which is more likely.

If you want an endorsement, the HyperX Cloud Flight made our list of the best gaming headsets, for the quality of its sound, durability and extensive battery life.

"You can likely get two full days of gaming in between full charges," we said. "There is a catch, however – unlike the Cloud Flight’s competition, namely the Astro A20, this gaming headset only offers stereo sound, ditching any surround sound capability.

"You can thankfully get circumvent that by messing around with the Dolby Access app, though, and the sound profile is balanced enough to make this a non-issue, making this one of the best PC gaming headsets in 2019." If it sounds like a good match for you, grab it before it's gone.

Not in the US? Check out prices for the Cloud Flight where you are below:

The best iPad 2019: is the iPad Air, Mini or Pro the best for you?

Want to buy the best iPad for you in 2019? Well you've got a lot of work on your plate: Apple's tablet line is a little confusing, with a wide range of new and older slates with a variety of similar (or identical) names.

Whether you're looking at the iPad Pro line, premium tablets with all the power of a computer; smaller slates like the iPad Air and iPad Mini with various sizes and specifications, or the base iPad line, there are many different options open to you, which complicates the process of finding the best iPad.

There are always new iPads coming out too, with the iPad 10.2 being a recent addition to our list - read on to find out where it places. These slates all run on iPadOS, Apple's operating system designed for tablets, an update that makes the best iPad even better for both work and play.

So if you're an expert tablet fan looking for a new high-powered slate, or a new prospective tech owner looking for your first iPad, our list of the best iPads will help you find the best gadget for your budget and needs.

We'd expect to see a few of the best iPads discounted for Black Friday 2019, the late-November deals bonanza that sees prices on tech and other products slashed. There's also Cyber Monday 2019, Black Friday's tech-focused finish line.

It's highly likely iPads, and possibly iPad peripherals too, will be discounted, so bookmark our Black Friday 2019 homepage and check back nearer the time for all the best deals.

Best iPads 2019: is the iPad Pro, Mini, Air or base the best iPad you can get right now?

The iPad Pro 11 is the best iPad you can buy right now. It may be expensive, but it's Apple's most powerful tablet and furthers the 2-in-1 design ethos if you spring for the pricey new keyboard cover folio.

It has a laptop-like experience in design and performance, and the new Apple Pencil magnetically clips onto the frame of the new iPad Pro. With superb speakers and a great new screen-to-body ratio, it's hard not to fall in love with the finely crafted hardware design.

And with the arrival of iPadOS its software has been transformed, making it even better than it was at launch.

However, it doesn't have a headphone jack. If you want the standard 3.5mm jack in a computer-like device, you'll spring for an actual computer.

Everything about the iPad Pro 11 makes it the best experience if you're looking for the best Apple tablet - you'll just need to swallow the high price - but it's no MacBook replacement.

Read the full review: iPad Pro 11

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is a big monster – monster in the good kind of way, as it effortlessly crushes half the things you need in your life – goodbye mobile phone, laptop, coloring pad, music mixing table, games console. It's the ultimate creativity and workflow tool, with its huge screen, useful peripherals and snappy iOS.

It has the fastest processing power we've ever seen in a mobile device, four powerful speakers and a vibrant screen and, depending on which model you get, more storage power than you'd ever need.

It doesn't have the best battery life though, so it's not going to last you too long. You might not be able to use it for long periods of time watching films on a journey or mixing your music, and it charges rather slowly too.

All in all, the iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is one of the best iPads you can buy right now, but if you don't need its huge display, the slighter cheaper iPad Pro 11 will save you a few bucks and be more portable.

Read the full review: iPad Pro 12.9

iPad 10.2

The iPad 10.2 brings Apple’s basic tablet range a step closer to the iPad Pro line – or at least the latest iPad Air - with the addition of Smart Keyboard support and a slightly larger screen, growing from 9.7 inches to 10.2 inches.

The iPad 10.2 also got a power boost, with an extra gigabyte of RAM compared to the iPad 9.7 (2018), though it’s stuck with the same A10 chipset.

It also has broadly the same design, meaning big bezels and a home button. So if you want one of Apple’s sleekest slates, this isn’t it.

But with strong battery life, decent performance, and a fairly low price – at least by Apple standards – there’s a lot to like here, especially if you want some of Apple’s best iPad features on a more limited budget.

Read the full review: iPad 10.2

The iPad Air, with a 10.5-inch screen, is the ultimate compromise between the entry-level iPads and the more powerful, but more expensive iPad Pro 11. It sits at the original iPad price in most countries, so it's cheaper than the iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) that it replaces, and although it isn't a 'Pro' tablet in name, it has several high-end features that make it a convincing laptop supplement.

It's one of the cheaper iPad models that's compatible with Apple's Smart Keyboard Cover, meaning you don't need to deal with tricky Bluetooth keyboard connections to get real work done on this thing.

It also has Apple's A12 chipset, borrowed from the iPhone XS. It's incredibly fast. Students will be able to take notes and respond to email on this tablet, but artists will hate the first-generation Apple Pencil.

Read the full review: iPad Air

Sometimes with a tablet you just want a slightly plus-sized phone, and the iPad Mini (2019) fits that bill. It's a dinky device with some impressive specs, boasting Apple's most recent processor and a decent battery life.

What makes the iPad Mini (2019) great is the fact you can use the Apple Pencil alongside it, turning the iPad Mini into a tiny notebook in your pocket.

The iPad Mini is one of the best small tablets you can get at its price point, so if you're looking for an easily totable pocket powerhouse, you can't get much better than this little monster.

Read the full review: iPad Mini (2019)

The iPad Pro 10.5-inch version is an all-star tablet which has since been superseded by the iPad Pro 11. There's good news for the Pro 10.5 though, as this means it's now cheaper - though it's also no longer sold direct from Apple.

Its bright ProMotion Retina HD screen is its best selling point. It adds an impressive layer of fluidity to daily use - if not strictly necessary - and the smaller bezels means you're getting far more display in a footprint not much bigger than 2016's 9.7.

It's an iPad for the professionals - but also one that media munchers will adore using.

It takes advantage of the Apple Pencil and several tablet-focused features like the dock, Control Center and Instant Markup with the stylus. If you invest in the recommended Smart Keyboard, you can attach it to a Pro-level iPad without jumping through all of the hoops of Bluetooth.

Best iPad: iPad 9.7 2018

This is a good Apple iPad for the average consumer and for education, even if it isn't the most powerful one available. It's still great value. That said, the newer iPad 10.2 has it beat for most users, and has the advantage of still being sold direct from Apple, which this model isn't.

The iPad (2018) replaces the very similar 2017 model, slotting in below the Pro and Air ranges with a dependable tablet that hasn't changed much in years - but Apple clearly feels it doesn't need to mess with success.

The basic iPad works with the Apple Pencil, offering you the cheapest way to doodle on the 9.7-inch glass - though you can't get the Smart Keyboard with this non-Pro model, for that you'll need the newer 10.2-inch one.

It also has the same luxurious metal unibody as the rest of Apple's iPad range, though notably it's ever-so-slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro at 7.5mm.

With the Touch ID fingerprint sensor included, iPadOS 13 under the hood and up to 10 hours of battery life when web browsing or watching videos, it's a great media player and a strong tablet choice if you're not planning to use it heavily for productivity.

Read the full review: iPad 9.7 (2018)

The iPad (2017) marked a name shift for Apple's tablets, as the Cupertino, California firm dropped 'Air' in favor for the cleaner moniker.

The iPad from 2017 has since been replaced by the iPad (2018) and iPad 10.2, but it's still a solid buy if you're looking for a more affordable Apple slate.

The only real problem is the newer iPads aren't that much more, so unless you're on a really tight budget, the newer versions are a better buy, especially as this model isn't still sold by Apple.

Read the full review: iPad (2017)

We really like the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) for its large size and - other than the newer iPad Pro 12.9 model - it's the closest thing we have to a 2-in-1 touchscreen MacBook. It just happens to run iPadOS 13 instead of macOS.

It's one of the best productivity and entertainment tablets around thanks to its 12.9-inch screen, four speakers and the dock and multitasking interface. Apple has redesigned its Control Center interface to make app switching even easier, and this tablet is compatible with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.

It's biggest weakness? The iPad Pro 12.9-inch price, and the size isn't a good fit for everyone. But If you can afford it and want the largest-sized iPad available, you're going to love this – it's a laptop-replacement for a lot of people out there.

Read the full review: iPad Pro 12.9 (2017)

iPad Mini 4

Big screens aren't for everyone, and that's where the 7.9-inch iPad Mini 4 comes in. The screen size means it's far more portable than Apple's larger tablets, especially as it's light at 299g. It's not quite small enough that you can use it one handed, but you can comfortably hold it for a lot longer than most of Apple's slates, or throw it in a bag and forget about it.

It's also big enough to enjoyably browse the net or watch videos on when you're away from home and bigger screens, but it's obviously not quite as strong an experience for most visual media as Apple's larger 9.7, 10.2, 10.5, 11 and 12.9-inch slates.

The small size and lack of Smart Connector also makes it worse for productivity than the iPad Pro range, but this isn't designed as a laptop replacement.

It's still fairly powerful thanks to 2GB of RAM and the aging but still impressive Apple A8 chip, while the screen is sharp, rich and easy to see even in bright sunlight.

The iPad Mini 4 is also a fraction of the price of Apple's Pro range, and with 128GB of storage you needn't be terribly limited in that area – though it's no match for the 256GB you can get in the iPad Pro.

Notably it has now been replaced by the iPad Mini (2019), which will be a much better buy for most people, but this remains a solid slate.

In May, we introduced you to high-wattage USB-C PD external batteries that can charge a full-size laptop on the go — not just a phone — and the $150 Zendure SuperTank was one of our top picks thanks to its (relatively) compact size and price. But for Black Friday, the SuperTank is now more affordable than it’s been since its Kickstarter campaign — just $100.99 after coupon code at Amazon.

For the price, you’ll get a 27,000mAh (roughly 100Wh) capacity — enough to fully charge a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and most of the 16-inch MacBook Pro’s larger battery too — and the ability to charge several gadgets at once with one 100W USB-C port, one 60W USB-C port, one 18W USB-A port, and one 15W USB-A port.

It has a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, the ability to shoot continuously at 5fps, and a very helpful Guide Mode to show you around its main features.

One of the main benefits of DSLRs like this over more modern mirrorless cameras is battery life, and indeed the Nikon D3300 keeps going for 700 shots per charge.

The Nikon DX system also has a vast range of lenses to choose from, so there's plenty of scope to upgrade its versatility as your abilities grow.

Make sure you act fast with this deal though – as an Amazon Lightning Deal, it'll expire within hours or possibly even minutes once it sells out.

Not in the US? Here are some great Nikon D3300 prices for your region.

Should I buy a Ninja Supra Kitchen System?

One way to create streamlined and clutter-free kitchen countertops is by taking the Marie Kondo route and limiting the number of small appliances you own. That said, no ergonomic and stylish kitchen should be without a decent blender. If you love to cook, the trusty blender is a flexible piece of equipment you’ll want to keep close to hand - it’s the ideal accompaniment for everyday meals and evening entertaining.

Use it to perform a host of functions such as crushing ice for evening cocktails or blending fruit for nutritious morning smoothies. An ergonomic blender will also puree, mix, emulsify and grind ingredients for your recipes in a matter of seconds.

If you’re looking to buy a blender, the choice online is huge so it can be hard to know which model to invest in. Type ‘blenders’ into Google and well-respected small appliance brands such as KitchenAid, Magimix and Tefal will appear.

The brand Ninja also pops up, offering a comprehensive range of blenders, coffee makers and multi cookers. A particular machine that stands out for us here at TechRadar for its range of culinary capabilities is the Ninja Supra Kitchen System. A blender system with food processor attached, the Ninja Supra Kitchen System retails at around £100 / $130 / AU $192, but we anticipate some great discounts on the gadget this Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

To help you make an informed choice on whether to consider the Ninja Supra Kitchen System for your kitchen, we take a closer look at its features here.

The Bottom Line: If you want a gadget that will let you perform a wide range of culinary tasks such as pureeing food for baby’s breakfast, to making delicious dips for an evening dinner party, the Ninja Supra Kitchen System is a worthy option.

Pros: The Ninja Supra Kitchen System does more than just blend foods. With its powerful 1200-watt motor and 1.5 horsepower design, it includes ‘Total Crushing Technology’ that lets you liquefy whole fruits, vegetables and break down ice in a matter of seconds. Its USP is that it also works as a food processor and comes set with an 8-cup bowl with chopping and dough blades. It also comes with two Nutri Ninja cups with lids so you can make smoothies to go.

Cons: Ninja has a large portfolio of small countertop appliances in its range aimed at those who love to cook delicious and nutritious foods from scratch. While the Ninja Supra Kitchen System has its pros, there are other models in the brand’s portfolio that you should also consider. The Ninja Blender & Soup Maker for example is down to £98 /$127 /AU$186 from £149.99 / $194 /AU$ in the Black Friday event, and features a built-in heating element that lets you cook soups on board.

Ninja Supra Kitchen System: everything you need to know

When investing in a blender, think about how you will use the machine. Do you want it to simply blend smoothies and crush ice? Or do you want a model that comes with food processing features for chopping and mixing bread? Variety is key so look for a flexible design with a number of blades, attachments and mixing jugs. Also think about how easy the machine is to clean – does it have dishwasher safe BPA-free parts as the Ninja Supra Kitchen System does, for example. Here are the most enticing features to try out in the Ninja Supra Kitchen System:

A motor that packs a punch: If time is of the essence (and when is it ever not?), the Ninja Supra Kitchen System will stand you in good stead. It comes packed with 1200 watts of power and Total Crushing Technology that means it can blitz ice, grind and blend frozen berries and whole fruits, and liquidize food in a matter of seconds. Its one-touch pulsing feature provides safer, convenient operation during food prep too.

Varied capacity: The Ninja Supra Kitchen System lets you blend, crush and pulse a range of quantities depending on your needs as it has a 64 oz max liquid capacity. You can easily interchange between the 72-oz blender pitcher when you fancy making juice for the whole family, to using one of the two 16oz Nutri Ninja cups with travel lids included for when you want to make a drink for on the go. Then there’s also the eight-cup bowl capacity food processor that comes with a chopping blade to coarsely chop and puree food and a dough blade ideal for mixing up to two lbs of dough in less than 30 seconds.

If you want to find out more about Ninja’s extensive kitchen appliance range, you can also check out our in-depth review of the Ninja Foodi Multi cooker here on the TechRadar website, where we give it a three and a half star rating and merit its large capacity and range of useful settings. The Ninja Foodi Multi Cooker has also been marked down in the Black Friday sales to £129 / $166 / $246.

It’s worth noting however, that not all KitchenAid appliances have been launched with positive feedback. In 2018, more than 20,000 5KEK1722 kettles needed to be recalled in the UK due to a problem with the handle.

KitchenAid also has some equally impressive competitors. Brands such as Kenwood, Sage and Cuisinart are just some of the names that are giving KitchenAid a run for its money with their stylish designs and clever tech spec. So, to find an appliance that will best suit you, remember that it will ultimately come down to the finer details – scrutinise features such as bowl sizes, speed setting range and how many attachments are offered, for example, whether a gadget comes with dishwasher safe parts or a warranty and if the quality of its customer service is one you admire – these will all play a part in making sure your cooking adventures run smoothly.

Conclusion

The best thing about the Ninja Supra Kitchen System is that it is a comprehensive blender that comes with food processing capabilities. As well as using it to make soups, dips and smoothies, its dough-mixing function is a useful tool for making your own bread. So if you’re keen to fill your home with the enticing aroma of freshly baked bread this Black Friday, the Ninja Supra Kitchen System is one to watch.

The Black Friday sales on the games we actually loved this year

Image: Remedy Entertainment

Black Friday is the best time of the year for the gaming fans who’ve felt like they didn’t have the budget or the time to pick up every new hit title on release day. I find myself in that category, as someone who played Insomniac’s excellent Spider-Man a year late (currently on Black Friday sale for $14.99 at Best Buy) and still has quite a few 2019 game of the year contenders sitting in my backlog.

Thankfully, this weekend is the time of the year when you can pull together between $50 and $100 and pick up a truly great collection of four or five games on the cheap.

While Black Friday is a great time to pick up old games for as little as the cost of a Fortnite battle pass (please play Bloodborne and God of War if you haven’t already,...

Save a whopping £141 on this Philips 4K Ambilight TV – now just £495

If you've been waiting for Black Friday to deliver a bargain Philips 4K UHD Ambilight TV, well it's just produced a cracker – this 58-inch set is now just £494.98 from Costco, including the £15 annual membership needed to buy it.

The 58PUS7304/12 offers impressive value considering its feature set. It's a 4K UHD set with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, along with an Android TV menu system that's usually found on its more premium models.

Another real bonus at this price is three-sided Ambilight, which produces a light show to match the on-screen action that really adds to its immersion. We've long been fans of Ambilight, which is a feature you can't get even on flagship sets from other manufacturers.

In order to buy the 58PUS7304/12 from Costco you just need the £15 annual subscription membership, which doesn't require any qualifications and gives you free technical support. The TV also comes with a five year warranty to help cover any repairs.

This Philips set comes with four HDMI ports for your consoles and set top boxes, plus a rather handsome metal stand that is again unusual for a sub-£500 4K TV. We've seen some excellent Black Friday TV deals so far, but this one is hard to beat for value.

Ray tracing is the future – but it's here now, and affordable even on gaming laptops thanks to Nvidia's RTX 2060

Ray tracing is the future of video game graphics. Don't believe us? Well, in this article we're going to discuss the reasons why ray tracing is incredibly important in the quest to advance with more realistic graphics, just in case you need any convincing that this technology is indeed very much the way forward.

Although perhaps it's not that you don't believe, but that you don't want to believe, because you've maybe heard that ray tracing is this niche thing that requires an overpowered and expensive graphics card and PC to be able to run.

The truth is that very much isn’t the case, and there are wallet-friendly graphics solutions from Nvidia which are fully ray tracing-capable, like the GeForce RTX 2060 GPU.

Furthermore, you can even get affordable laptops which can run ray-traced games powered by the mobile variant of the RTX 2060. Yes, a slim and light laptop with a graphics card capable of delivering slick frame rates with ray tracing bells-and-whistles turned on is fully within the grasp of the average gamer, as we'll see later.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. To begin with, let's take a look at exactly what ray tracing is, and why it's the future. Although the history of ray tracing is actually buried perhaps surprisingly far in the past…

What is ray tracing?

Ray tracing was initially used to produce spectacular lighting effects in movies, and Pixar's Car in 2006 was the first movie to extensively use real-time ray tracing. As to what ray tracing actually is, on a basic level, it's a far more realistic way of depicting lighting and other effects.

Ray tracing actually traces the paths of individual light rays and more accurately simulates how light works in the real world in terms of its interaction with objects, and the way light creates shadows, reflections in puddles and all sorts of other sophisticated effects.

In short, films look far more like real-life with ray tracing – and video games can, too. So why hasn't ray tracing been done with games before (aside from in very limited fashion with early demos)? Because it needs a lot more graphical grunt than rasterization, the traditional method of real-time rendering which it supplants.

Rendering a movie with ray tracing in advance is one thing, but doing ray tracing on-the-fly as someone plays a game and moves around a 3D environment in real-time is another matter, and considerably more demanding.

The power to do this hasn't realistically been available on a PC – until now, that is, after Nvidia launched its RTX graphics cards which have hardware acceleration to make ray tracing run much faster. This is what's made ray tracing with PC games a more than viable proposition.

However, let's put the brakes on for a moment here, in case we're giving the wrong impression, because ray tracing isn't some sort of Nvidia exclusive. It is, in actual fact, more of an all-pervading development in PC gaming, as Microsoft has built ray tracing right into DirectX 12 (which the company is pushing hard with Windows 10).

Indeed, Microsoft continues to improve its support for DXR or DirectX Raytracing, with DXR aiming to give more game developers the ability to use ray tracing with their graphics, and driving for a broader adoption of the tech among PC gamers as a result.

And those game developers aren't hanging around. A number of games which are already out support ray tracing, and many more 'AAA' titles in the pipeline also plan to make use of the technology to ramp up their visuals to another level.

The likes of Battlefield V, Metro Exodus, Control and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are among the games that already support ray tracing, and many high-profile releases in the future will do so – most notably Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs: Legion, Bloodlines 2 and Doom Eternal.

Furthermore, old games are being given a fresh new lease of life with their graphics getting ray tracing makeovers in some cases, like Quake II and the hugely popular Minecraft (the latter is still in the pipeline).

We won't bore you with big old lists, but the point is a lot of major developers are working on ray tracing, because they see it as the future of better looking video games with graphics that are much truer to real-life in jaw-dropping fashion. And not just on PC, but on consoles – yes, both Microsoft's and Sony's next-gen consoles will support ray tracing.

This is exactly why ray tracing is the future, but what will your PC need to cope with that future? Well, any GPU can run ray tracing in theory, but the issue is whether it can render those visuals smoothly, and that’s where Nvidia's latest GPUs have the advantage.

GeForce RTX graphics cards have hardware acceleration in the form of dedicated cores which are specifically designed to deliver fast real-time ray tracing. In other words, you get the stunning graphics with suitably smooth frame rates – even with the most affordable RTX GPU.

That would be the RTX 2060 which can very capably cope with the likes of Battlefield V or Metro Exodus with ray tracing on, or indeed more recent releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The latter only has ray-traced shadows, which helps in terms of being less demanding when you’re playing competitively online, yet still wanting the best visuals.

The RTX 2060 is still good for tackling even more demanding titles that have a whole load of ray tracing goodies, such as Remedy’s Control, which looks truly amazing with transparent surfaces (like glass) benefiting from realistic real-time reflections, and ray-traced effects even applied to debris. However, the RTX 2060 can cope with these demands, particularly with the help of DLSS, another innovative Nvidia technology.

And perhaps the most incredible thing here is that the RTX 2060 boasts a mobile version of the GPU which can fit inside a laptop, meaning you can take all this ray tracing power with you on the move, wherever you're gaming.

Get a ray tracing laptop today

Indeed, a laptop running an RTX 2060 graphics card can be a great entry point into the world of ray tracing, because these machines are surprisingly affordable. Here’s an example: a supremely tempting Black Friday deal on an HP Omen 15.

This 15-inch gaming laptop is driven by one of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2060 graphics cards (with 6GB of video memory) in conjunction with an Intel Core i5-8300H quad-core processor. That powerful combination is backed by 8GB of DDR4 system RAM, with a 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD for lightning fast load times (partnered with a 1TB traditional hard disk for storage space).

It wouldn’t be a satisfactory state of affairs if the HP Omen 15 didn’t have an impressive screen to display those high quality ray-traced visuals on, but fortunately it does. The notebook has a Full HD 15.6-inch IPS micro-edge (very thin bezels) display that benefits from a refresh rate of 144Hz (meaning the powerful RTX 2060 GPU can push up to high and extremely smooth frame rates).

Other neat touches include an RGB backlit keyboard, Bang & Olufsen speakers for quality sound, and another cutting-edge element is the availability of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity on the Omen 15. Having been reduced to just under a grand – £999.97, which represents a £200 saving on the normal asking price – this laptop from Box is an absolute bargain-and-a-half.

So ray tracing doesn’t have to cost the earth – far from it, even on a notebook. And don’t forget a current promotion from Nvidia means that if you buy this RTX laptop, you get a free copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so you can get started right away with your jaw-slackening exploration of next-gen visuals.

Good news: for Black Friday 2019, there are 10 different TCL Roku TVs on sale from three different categories, and we've curated a list of the rock bottom price of each. And the funny thing is that we were all ready to write about these 10 different 4K TVs on sale when the price on each of them dropped... again.

We finally recalculated these 4K TVs prices again, but you'll have to see the discount to get an accurate reading of the current price. You never know how much it'll cost for these cheap 4K TV at any minute given the Amazon Black Friday deals and how fast they move.

Let's start this top 10 list talking about the double price we've seen on the high-end 6-Series 4K TVs. Yes, there should be a total of 12 instead of 10, but two are sold out. There's no telling if they will be in stock next week when Cyber Monday deals roll around.

The Nikon D3500 drops to its lowest price in this unmissable Black Friday bargain

Our number one DSLR for beginners has just fallen to its lowest ever price in a Black Friday Jessops deal that gives you the Nikon D3500, plus an 18-55mm AF-P VR kit lens for just £299.

That's a particularly good deal because, unlike some other retailers, the £299 Jessops deal includes the 'VR' version of the camera's kit lens. That means it includes vibration reduction, which is Nikon's form of optical stabilisation that helps you preserve image quality when taking handheld shots.

Aside from its even lower price tag, the Nikon D3500 is a fantastic camera for beginners because it has a handy Guide Mode that takes you through the camera's main features and helps you understand the effect they have on your snaps.

Considering that lens costs £199 on its own, you're effectively getting the D3500 for around £100, which is hugely impressive value – and we think that's going to be tough to beat during Black Friday.

There are some impressive mirrorless cameras around these days, so why go for a DSLR like the Nikon D3500? Because it has an optical viewfinder, rather than an electronic equivalent, the D3500 is able to offer a lower price tag and much longer battery life than its mirrorless rivals. It can keep going for 1,550 images between charges, which is around three times as long as a mirrorless camera.

While some may prefer a more compact, travel-friendly form factor, the D3500's size means it also offers very good handling, which is another boon if you're just starting out.

This Jessops deal also throws in a final couple of sweeteners including a free 1-2-1 training course and a 12x8in canvas worth £19.99, which will be handy for turning your first great D3500 photo into wall art. If you're looking to step up from your smartphone and learn the joys of creative manual shooting, this deal is a fantastic place to start.

New Oculus Rift S VR headset is cheaper than ever in the Black Friday sales

There aren't a huge number of Black Friday deals on VR headsets, so if you were hoping the sales season would slash the prices of several pieces of kit, you're in for disappointment - but now there's one discount that might help.

The Oculus Rift S VR headset, released earlier in 2019, is intended as the entry-level VR headset for people who aren't quite experts at setting up VR kits. It released at $399, and has stayed at that price - until the Amazon Black Friday sales right now.

It's not an incredibly low price, but a decent price cut this soon after release is unexpected, so if you want to enter the world of VR, buy it below:

Get a premium VR headset for less with price cuts on HTC Vive Cosmos, Vive Pro

VR headsets can be expensive, can't they? While there are plenty of budget and mid-range options out there – say, the Oculus Go – to really get one of the best VR experiences available today, you'll have to splash out more than a couple of hundred pounds. It's fortunate, then, that Black Friday is upon us, and bringing a whole load of VR headset deals with it.

The new HTC Vive Cosmos has seen a £100 price cut, bringing it down to only £599 – with six free months of Viveport Infinity thrown in too, meaning you get access to hundreds of VR titles without paying another penny.

The HTC Vive Pro, on the other hand, has got a £200 discount for its Full Kit bundle, which throws in sensors for room-scale tracking, as well as two controllers for use with the headset – now for £1,099. We'd seen this price previously back in October, but if you didn't manage to grab it then, now may be the time.

You'll also find discounts on accessories that turn these wired VR headsets into wireless gadgets, meaning you can ditch the cable for more portable play.

HTC Vive Cosmos Black Friday deals

HTC Vive Pro Black Friday deals

Vive Pro is now getting on a bit, given it launched in 2016, but it remains one of the best VR headsets we've reviewed. At a time when most manufacturers in the VR space are aiming at market-friendly mid-range models, the Vive Pro is still unapologetically premium.

But it also relies on external sensors for location tracking, unlike the cheaper Vive Cosmos (new for 2019), which uses six embedded cameras in the headset itself. The controllers for the Cosmos are also more gamer-friendly, with additional trigger and shoulder buttons instead of the Pro's trackpad. Both however require a wired connection to a capable PC (specs on their respective product pages), and have equivalent pixel density (1440 x 1600 for the Vive Pro, and 1,440 x 1,700 for the Cosmos).

If you're not in the UK, or want to check out deals on more VR headsets before you make your choice, have a gander below:
